What is it like to be model? - Tampa Photography

It’s no secret that many photographers use family members and friends as models to practice with and to hone in on their skills. Some kids get what we call photog kid syndrome which means that they absolutely hate when the camera comes out and they become completely uncooperative. For my daughter Ariana, she learned to embrace being in front of the lens and has built up quite the modeling portfolio.

When asked what is it like to model, Ariana responded with a big smile and raise eyebrow.

“It can be tiring and long but it’s so much fun!”

What is the hardest part of it?

“Holding a pose for a long time or having to repeat the pose over and over is a work out! Also, it takes mental prep to get the facial looks the photographers ask for. I listen to music, pretend that I am in a certain scenario almost like being an actress in order to get my face to express what they are looking for.”

What makes the experience fun for you?

“All the clothes, make up and beautiful locations are what makes the experience amazing. Meeting people, working with others and watching their vision come together is so satisifying.”

Other than preparing mentally for a photoshoot what are some of the other things you do to get ready?

“Skin care and drinking lots of water is important to me, carefully selecting skin care products is a must and making sure that I get ample amounts of sleep is crucial. Also, knowing the vision for the shoot is super helpful when it comes to planning how to pose.”

Speaking of posing, do you have any tips or tricks you can share with those just starting out?

“Take deep breathes frequently to release the tension that unknowingly builds up on you face and body. Keeping your face and muscles relaxed helps give the most natural pose. Bend arms and legs when possible, keep your posture nice and straight and sometimes keeping your eyes closed and opening slowly gives a nice soft expression. I also try to mimic some basic ballet poses since they always give such graceful movements.”

Are there any other talents that you have that help you model and prep for shoots.

“Well, I used to dance ballet, jazz and tap for 6 years so I’d say that was a big help. I’m also a musician so finding a rhythm or making up my own is definitely something that I incorporate in modeling and many other things in my life.”

Thanks so much for sharing your experience Ariana.
